YABATECH STUDENT APPEALS- THE VOICE OF A VOICELESS YABATECH STUDENT
To the general public, students and to whom it may concern!
Following the incident that happened at the prestigious school; Yaba
college of technology; Yabatech; different news as emanated from various
sources on the death of one of yabatech’s final year student.
To refresh our memories and to those who didn’t get the scoop of what
really happened; below is a detailed summary of the whole incident.
Dazan an HND2 final year student of Office Technology Management (OTM) at
about 2am on Wednesday lost her life to death at the federal medical centre
on Tuesday afternoon at the
school medical centre, and was later discharged and taken back to the
hospital by the school ambulance, she was accompanied by friends and later
in the night the situation got worse and was rushed back to the medical
centre by her roommate for proper medical care; the people available
couldn’t do anything as the situation had worsened.
She was later referred to the federal medical centre at Ebute-Metta, on
getting there the doctor on duty insisted on pay before treatment , it was
an emergency case that needed quick medical attention, but the doctor
refused, the sick patient begged for her life to be rescused but all was in
vain, her friends ran back to school about 1am to rally round for money and
was able to get #38,000 (Thirty Eight Thousand Naira) but the whole effort
was in vain as she gave up the ghost around 2am. Her corpse was returned
back to school that same moment, this is a big tragedy which shouldn’t have
happened if the college had enough facilities to take care of its student.
According to news from Punch newspapers and their online website, it was
said that the Head, Public relations Unit, Yabatech , Charles Oni, said the
students protested in order to disrupt the college’s examinations but what
the student really wanted was just some weeks (2 weeks to be specific) to
mourn their beloved colleague; is that too much to ask?!
The whole scenario is beginning to get too suspicious as the management is
trying to put all blames on its students.
Lets face the fact; if the first federal polytechnic in Nigeria; Yabatech
as it is called had enough medical facilities to attend to its student ;
Dazan would have obviously been treated and probably still alive today.
Can you imagine an hospital giving paracetamol to a student to treat burns
from hot water?! That’s one of the best prescibtion Yabatech medical centre
prescribes to its students an eye witness reported.
Yabatech student has forwarded their demands to themanagement seeking for
the underlisted below; attached also is a picture of what we the student
demanded.
1. That there must be 2 weeks mourning of our colleague who died due to
the negligence of medical personnel of the college.
2. That there must be no exams, practical, lectures or any academic
activities in the college during the mourning of our deceased and beloved
colleague.
3. That the college must pay condolence visit and compensate the family
of the deceased financially and otherwise
4. That our student union government must be restored so as to cater for
the needs of our colleagues within Yaba campus and Epe campus.
5. That all our hostels, rest rooms, gents in hostels or lecture halls ,
classrooms must be fumigated and rehabilitated at the end of each session.
6. That all the bug-wooden furniture in halls of residence must be
replaced with immediate effect.
7. That the cafeteria , eateries must be hygienic to avoid environmental
hazards
8. That all under no condition must the college management, lectures ,
staffs of the college victimize any student unnecessarily after this whole
incident.
The only demand that has been met or we think has been met is the 4 weeks’
vacation given to students by the management.
We requested for just 2 weeks, we see this as a punishment coming from the
management to its students as it is very obvious among its students are
final year candidates both in ND2 and HND2.
This final year student having plans for the future both for service and
those that would be going for IT has been deprived a great deal.
All students were ready for the examinations which were too hold on the 15th
of February with no complains even though we resumed sometime January and
had to start Exams February…
Other departments started exams with no complains just like the department
of the deceased and some students in the faculty of Engineering, so we
really don’t understand what the Head, Public relations Unit, Yabatech ,
Charles Oni, is saying about student protesting so as to disrupt the
college’s examinations.
We plead to the management to just give us our stipulated week for mourning
and we resume school activities in earnest.
TWO WEEKS IS ALL WE NEED!!!
