Fayose appoints 72- year old illiterate carpenter LG Chairman
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele
Fayose, has appointed a 72-year
old carpenter, Olatunde
Afolayan, as caretaker
chairman of Moba Local
Government Area. of the state.
Mr. Afolayan, an illiterate, was
on Friday sworn-in as
chairman along with Bayode
Ayeni and Owolabi Ajewole,
who were appointed for Ikole
and Ijero councils respectively,
Mr. Fayose said many of the
champions of democracy in
Nigeria depended on
illiterates to survive
electioneering campaigns,
lamenting that such persons
were forgotten as soon as the
politicians got to power.
“In my government, whether
you are educated or not, you
will get something. The vote of
a professor and an illiterate is
the same,” he assured.
“So, under my administration,
those who are not educated can
rise to any
level they want.”
Adding a rare drama to the
event, Mr. Fayose, at the
ceremony, appointed a graduate
as personal assistant for Mr.
Afolayan.
Mr. Afolayan, who expressed
gratitude for the governor’s
gesture, said he had hoped only
to become a ward chairman.
He promised to surpass the
records of his predecessors so
as to justify Mr. Fayose’s stand
that local people were
intelligent and visionary.
“I have never gone to school
for a day, but that does not
reduce my intelligence,” he
said.
“I may not be educated or have
any certificate, but I have brain
and experience to lead the
affairs of the council.”
